» Mitochondrial Disease:

Mitochondrial Disease

Posted by on July 7, 2011 at 4:24 pm.

This video hits close to home for me because 2 of my grandsons Grant (age 4) and Jacob (age 2) are both afflicted with Mitochondrial disease. My goal here is to raise the awareness level of Mitochondrial disease and hopefully with increased awareness comes increased funding for Mitochondrial research. It is a sad fact that since 1995 a total of just 8 million dollars has been privately raised for Mitochondrial research. That’s about 500 thousand dollars a year to research a disease that affects tens of thousands of people (mostly children) in the United States alone. It is beyond my comprehension as to how our government can hand out trillions to financial institutions and cannot find one penny for research into a disease affecting so many of it’s children. That’s right, not one penny of government money has ever been allocated for researching Mitochondrial disease. The last bill before congress H.R. 3502 was referred to committee but was never put to a vote. As a citizen and a taxpayer, I wonder how long our government will continue to waste my hard earned tax dollars on a long list of wasteful projects that have little or no value to any of us on main street. As a grandfather, I wonder how long I can standby and watch, as the likes of Lloyd Blankfein (CEO of taxpayer supported Goldman Sachs) make yearly bonuses larger than the amount spent on Mitochondrial research for the last 16 years. Others may continue to bury their heads in the sand as our government trivializes the lives of ordinary citizens while enriching a powerful priveleged class, but for me the battle is personal and that battle has only just begun.
